OPEN AQUACULTURE INDUSTRIAL ZONE

Aquaculture Industrial Zone (ZIA) in Hulu Terengganu.

The freshwater cage-fish rearing project at Taman Kekal Pengeluaran Makanan covers a 2,800ha site in Sungai Como, Tasik Kenyir, Hulu Terengganu.

The RM50 million red tilapia rearing project is expected to produce 9,000 tonnes of fish by 2010 for local and foreign markets, including to Europe and the United States.

The project also provides jobs to about 240 people from among participants of the Hardcore Poor Housing Programme (PPRT) and jobless graduates, with a monthly income of at least RM1,000.

The ZIA in Terengganu is the second in the country after a similar project was launched in Sik, Kedah, last year.

They are part of 39 high-impact aquaculture projects identified by the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry to provide new sources of income to the hardcore poor.
